Catalog Number: (BOSSBS-4200R-FITC)
Supplier: Bioss
Description: Selenium is an essential trace element that confers tolerance to toxicity arising through exposure to heavy metals or other reactive xenobiotics. Selenium exhibits potent anticarcinogenic properties, and deficiency of selenium may cause certain neurologic diseases. Both effects are attributed to selenium-binding proteins. Selenium binding protein 1 is down-regulated in lung adenocarcinoma, colorectal cander and ovarian cancer. It is two-fold upregulated in the brains of patients suffering from schizophrenia, and is therefore a biomarker for this disease.

Supplier: Apollo Scientific
Description: Substrate for peroxidase. Also can be used for determination of selenium.

Supplier: VWR Chemicals
Description: Kjeldahl tablets are catalysts that promote the digestion step of the Kjeldahl method for nitrogen determination.
Supplier: Biowest
Description: In 1976, Guilbert and Iscove demonstrated that precursor cells of erythrocytes and macrophages could be cultured in a reduced-serum medium supplemented with albumin, transferrin, lecithin, and selenium. Iscove's medium is a modification of Dulbecco's Modified Eagle's Medium (DME) containing selenium, additional amino acids and vitamins, sodium pyruvate, HEPES buffer, and potassium nitrate instead of ferric nitrate. Further studies have demonstrated that Iscove's medium will support murine B lymphocytes, haemopoietic tissue from bone marrow, B-cells stimulated with lipopolysaccharide, T-lymphocytes, and a variety of hybrid cells.

Supplier: Bioss
Description: Glutathione peroxidase (GPx) enzymes are generally selenium-containing tetrameric glycoproteins that help prevent lipid peroxidation of cell membranes. GPx enzymes reduce lipid hydroperoxides to alcohols, and reduce free hydrogen peroxide to water. GPx members are among the few proteins known in higher vertebrates to contain selenocysteine, which occurs at the active site of glutathione peroxidase and is coded by the nonsense (stop) codon TGA. There are eight GPx homologs (GPx-1–8). GPx-1 plays an important role in the antioxidant defense of the vascular wall and neural cells in response to oxidative stress. GPx-2 is the major isoform in the lungs and its basal or inducible expression is dependent on Nrf2. GPx-3 is under regulation by hypoxic stress and the expression and deficiency of GPx-3 is associated with cardiovascular disease and stroke. GPx-5 is selenium-independent; it is bound to the acrosome of sperm, where it may protect sperm from premature acrosome reaction in the epididymis.

Description: Ham's F12 was originally developed for the serum-free clonal growth of Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO) cells, lung cells and mouse L-cells. It is frequently used with dialysed serum, hormones, selenium and other supplements for serum-free cultures. It is the medium of choice for supporting the growth of cells of rodent origin, particularly rabbit and rat and has proved to be an excellent cloning medium for the culture of myeloma and hybrid cells.
