Description: The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the fibroblast growth factor (FGF) family. FGF family members possess broad mitogenic and cell survival activities and are involved in a variety of biological processes including embryonic development, cell growth, morphogenesis, tissue repair, tumor growth and invasion. This gene was identified by its oncogenic transforming activity. This gene and FGF3, another oncogenic growth factor, are located closely on chromosome 11. Co-amplification of both genes was found in various kinds of human tumors. Studies on the mouse homolog suggested a function in bone morphogenesis and limb development through the sonic hedgehog (SHH) signaling pathway. [provided by RefSeq].

Description: Recognizes a single chain glycoprotein of 70 kDa, identified as CD55 (also known as decay accelerating factor, DAF). CD55/DAF is widely expressed on cells throughout the body including leukocytes, erythrocytes, epithelium, endothelium, and fibroblasts. It is a Glycosyl phosphatidylinositol anchored (GPI-anchored) member of the membrane bound complement regulatory proteins that inhibit autologous complement cascade activation. It prevents the amplification steps of the complement cascade by interfering with the assembly of the C3-convertases, C4b2a and C3bBb, and the C5-convertase, C4b2a3b and C3bBb3b. CD55 also serves as receptor for CD97 and for echovirus and Coxsackie B virus. The MAb 143-30 can be used as marker for paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH).

Description: P55 is an extensively palmitoylated erythrocyte membrane protein, and a member of the MAGUK family. P55 also resists salt extraction, resulting in a high affinity for the plasma membrane. P55 contains a PDZ/DHR domain, a conserved SH-3 domain that appears to suppress tyrosine kinase activity of various oncoproteins, a 39-amino acid motif that binds to cytoskeletal protein 4.1R, and a guanylate kinase-like domain. Interaction with glycophorin C (GPC) and 4.1R suggests that p55 may play a role in the dynamic regulation in the erythrocyte membrane. In addition, p55 gene expression in vivo may be associated with a CpG island. P55 is constitutively expressed in K562 erythroleukemia cells during erythropoiesis and undergoes a 2-fold amplification after induction.

Description: HHCM is a 467 amino acid protein that has oncogenic transforming capabilities on a variety of different cell lines. When HHCM was transfected into BRL-1 (Buffalo rat liver) or NIH3T3 cells, the cells exhibited significant morphological changes, anchorage independent growth and loss of contact inhibition. When the cells were inoculated into rats and mice, they became highly tumorigenic. HHCM gene-related DNA sequences were found in at least nineteen hepatomas of Asian origin. The gene encoding HHCM maps to human chromosome 8, which is made up of nearly 146 million bases and encodes about 800 genes. Translocation of portions of chromosome 8 with amplifications of the c-Myc gene are found in some leukemias and lymphomas, and are typically associated with a poor prognosis.

Description: Made up of nearly 146 million bases, chromosome 8 encodes about 800 genes. Translocation of portions of chromosome 8 with amplifications of the c-Myc gene are found in some leukemias and lymphomas, and typically associated with a poor prognosis. Portions of chromosome 8 have been linked to schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Trisomy 8, also known as Warkany syndrome 2, most often results in early miscarriage but is occasionally seen in a mosaic form in surviving patients who suffer to a varying degree from a number of symptoms including retarded mental and motor development, and certain facial and developmental defects. WRN is a DNA helicase encoded by chromosome 8 and shown defective in those with the early aging disorder Werner syndrome. Chromosome 8 is also associated with Pfeiffer syndrome, congenital hypothyroidism and Waardenburg syndrome.
