Bovine spongiform encephalophathy (BSE), also known as Mad Cow Disease, is a neurodegenerative, fatal condition in cattle. Consuming BSE-infected beef is believed to be the cause of a similar condition in humans, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. In this experiment, students examine simulated PCR products from several feed mills, to determine any possible violations of the ban on including animal parts in cattle feed.

  • For six lab groups

Also required: Electrophoresis tank, power supply, micropipettes (5 to 50 µl adjustable or 40 µl fixed volume) with tips, and a white light box is recommended.

Delivery information: Kit includes instructions, Ready-to-Load™ DNA samples, agarose powder, practice gel loading solution, electrophoresis buffer, InstaStain® DNA stain, 1 ml calibrated drop pipette, 100 ml graduated cyclinder and microtipped transfer pipettes.
