Tetrabromophenol Blue (TBPB) belongs to the group of sulfonephthalein acid-base indicators. It is employed in the potentiometric titration of the halogens with Hg₂(NO₃)₂. In addition, it has been used as a dye indicator in urine dipstick test to detect proteinuria. In this assay, with increasing concentration of urinary protein, TBPB sequentially changes colour from pale green to blue. Binding of TBPB to proteins is dependent on pH.
It is also used a diagnostic assay manufacturing, hematology, histology.
